When Can You Find Out Your Baby’s Gender?
For many parents, discovering their baby’s gender is one of the most exciting milestones in pregnancy. While the NHS will usually confirm this at your 20-week scan, many families choose to book a private gender scan earlier for reassurance and to share the news with loved ones.
The Best Time for a Gender Scan
At our Consett clinic, we can usually determine your baby’s gender from 16 weeks onwards. By this stage, the baby’s development makes it easier to see whether you’re expecting a boy or girl, and our high-quality ultrasound equipment helps improve accuracy.
Before 16 weeks, it’s often too early to tell with confidence, which is why we recommend waiting until this stage for the clearest results.
How Accurate Are Gender Scans?
Our experienced sonographers aim to provide the most accurate results possible, and in most cases, gender can be confirmed with a high degree of confidence. However, it’s important to remember that no scan can ever be 100 percent certain. Factors like your baby’s position, the amount of amniotic fluid, or the presence of a twin can sometimes make things less clear.
If we can’t see clearly during your appointment, we’ll usually offer a free rescan to confirm.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
A gender scan is very similar to a routine ultrasound. You’ll be asked to lie back while a small amount of gel is placed on your tummy, and the sonographer will gently move the ultrasound probe across your skin.
During the appointment you can expect:
- To see your baby on screen in real time
- A clear explanation from your sonographer as they check baby’s development
- The option to find out your baby’s gender immediately or have it sealed in an envelope for a surprise later
- Keepsake images to take home – or even a heartbeat bear if you’d like something extra special
Making It a Family Moment
Many parents choose to bring their partner, family, or a close friend along to share the moment. Some even plan a gender reveal after the appointment, using balloons, cakes, or creative announcements.
Whatever you choose, finding out your baby’s gender is a memorable experience that helps bring your pregnancy journey to life.
In summary: you can usually find out your baby’s gender from 16 weeks onwards at our Consett baby scan clinic. With expert sonographers, accurate equipment, and a caring environment, we make the experience one to treasure.
