12 Weeks Pregnant: How Big Is Your Baby?

At 12 weeks pregnant, you’ve reached an important milestone — the end of your first trimester. For many parents, this stage brings a sense of relief, as the risk of complications reduces and pregnancy begins to feel more real.

How Big Is Your Baby at 12 Weeks?

What Is Happening at 12 Weeks Pregnant?

This is a significant stage in your baby’s development.

At 12 weeks:

  • Your baby’s organs are fully formed and starting to function
  • The heartbeat is strong and easily detected on a scan
  • Facial features are becoming more defined
  • Your baby may begin making small movements, although you won’t feel them yet
  • Fingers and toes are fully developed
  • The placenta is now taking over hormone production

Your baby is now officially called a foetus, rather than an embryo.

Many early pregnancy symptoms may begin to settle around this time.

You might notice:

  • Reduced nausea or morning sickness
  • More stable energy levels
  • Continued breast tenderness
  • Occasional headaches or dizziness

For some, symptoms continue a little longer, while others begin to feel more like themselves again.

What Happens at the 12 Week Scan?

Around this time, you will usually be offered your NHS dating scan, typically between 11 and 14 weeks.

During this scan, you can expect:

  • Confirmation of your due date
  • Measurements of your baby
  • A check on your baby’s development
  • Screening for certain conditions, if you choose

This is often the first time many parents see their baby on screen, making it a very special moment.

Can You Have a Private Scan at 12 Weeks?

Yes, many parents choose to have a private scan around 12 weeks as well.

This can offer:

  • Additional reassurance before or after your NHS scan
  • More time to see your baby on screen
  • Printed images and keepsakes
  • A calmer, more personal experience

It can also be helpful if you would like to share the experience with family in a more relaxed setting.

Looking Ahead to the Next Stage

After 12 weeks, you move into the second trimester, which is often seen as the more comfortable stage of pregnancy.

Over the coming weeks:

  • Your baby will grow rapidly
  • You may begin to feel movement
  • You can start thinking about a gender scan from 16 weeks onwards
