18 Weeks Pregnant: How Big Is Your Baby?

At 18 weeks pregnant, your baby is growing quickly, and this is often when pregnancy starts to feel more real. You may begin to notice more regular movement, and your bump is likely becoming more visible.

What Is Happening at 18 Weeks Pregnant?

This is an exciting stage of development, with lots happening behind the scenes.

At 18 weeks:

  • Your baby is moving more actively, including kicking and stretching
  • The ears are now in position, and your baby may begin to hear sounds
  • Facial features are becoming more defined
  • The nervous system is developing further
  • Your baby’s bones are continuing to strengthen

Although you may not feel every movement yet, your baby is becoming more active each day.

Common Symptoms at 18 Weeks

Many people feel more comfortable at this stage, but some symptoms may still be present.

You might experience:

  • A growing baby bump
  • Back or hip discomfort
  • Increased appetite
  • Occasional dizziness
  • First noticeable baby movements

Every pregnancy is different, so your experience may vary.

Feeling Your Baby Move

Around 18 weeks, many parents begin to feel their baby move for the first time.

This is often described as:

  • Gentle flutters
  • A bubbling sensation
  • Light taps or movements

If this is your first pregnancy, it may take a little longer to recognise these movements, but they will become more noticeable over the coming weeks.

Looking Ahead to Your 20 Week Scan

You are now approaching your 20 week NHS anomaly scan, which is one of the most detailed scans during pregnancy.

This scan will check:

  • Your baby’s development
  • Organs and overall structure
  • Growth and measurements
  • Placenta position

For many parents, this is another important and reassuring milestone.
