20 Weeks Pregnant: How Big Is Your Baby?

At 20 weeks pregnant, you’ve reached the halfway point of your pregnancy. This is a major milestone, and for many parents, it’s when everything starts to feel more real as movements become stronger and more regular.

At 20 weeks, your baby is around the size of a banana, measuring roughly 25 centimetres long from head to heel.

Your baby is continuing to grow steadily and is becoming more proportionate in size.

What Is Happening at 20 Weeks Pregnant?

At this stage, your baby is developing rapidly and becoming more active.

At 20 weeks:

  • Your baby is moving regularly, and you may feel kicks more clearly
  • The digestive system is developing, and your baby may begin swallowing small amounts of fluid
  • Fine hair, known as lanugo, covers your baby’s body
  • The skin is developing protective layers
  • Your baby’s senses are becoming more developed

You may begin to notice patterns in your baby’s movements as they become more consistent.

Common Symptoms at 20 Weeks

Many people feel more comfortable during this stage of pregnancy.

You might experience:

  • Regular baby movements
  • A noticeable baby bump
  • Increased appetite
  • Mild aches or back discomfort
  • Improved energy levels

This is often considered one of the more enjoyable stages of pregnancy.

What Happens at the 20 Week Scan?

Around this time, you will usually have your NHS anomaly scan, which is one of the most detailed scans during pregnancy.

During this scan, you can expect:

  • A detailed check of your baby’s organs and development
  • Measurements to ensure your baby is growing as expected
  • A check of the placenta position
  • Assessment of amniotic fluid levels

You may also be offered the opportunity to find out your baby’s gender, although this depends on your preference and the clarity of the scan.

Can You Have a Private Scan at 20 Weeks?

Yes, many parents choose to have a private scan alongside their NHS appointment.

A private scan can offer:

  • A more relaxed and personal experience
  • Additional time to see your baby on screen
  • Printed images and keepsakes
  • The option to confirm your baby’s gender

This can be a lovely way to share the experience with family or capture more detailed memories.
