How Big Is Your Baby at 36 Weeks?

At 36 weeks, your baby is around the size of a romaine lettuce, measuring roughly 47 to 48 centimetres long from head to heel.

Your baby continues to gain weight, and their body is becoming fuller and more rounded.

What Is Happening at 36 Weeks Pregnant?

At this stage, your baby is almost fully developed.

At 36 weeks:

  • Your baby’s organs are fully developed and ready for birth
  • The lungs are nearly fully mature
  • Your baby is continuing to gain weight and build fat stores
  • Movements may feel different due to limited space
  • Your baby is likely in their final position

Most babies will now be in a head-down position, ready for delivery.

Common Symptoms at 36 Weeks

As you approach your due date, your body is preparing for labour.

You might experience:

  • Increased pelvic pressure
  • Braxton Hicks contractions
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Lower back pain
  • Frequent need to urinate

These symptoms are completely normal as your baby drops lower into your pelvis.

Your Baby’s Position at 36 Weeks

By 36 weeks, many babies are in their final position for birth.

The most common position is:

  • Head down (cephalic)

If your baby is not yet in this position, your midwife may discuss options with you. Some babies will still turn naturally in the coming weeks.

Checking Baby’s Position and Wellbeing

At this stage, many parents want reassurance that everything is progressing as expected.

A growth and presentation scan can help:

  • Confirm your baby’s position
  • Check overall wellbeing
  • Estimate your baby’s weight
  • Provide reassurance before labour

This can be especially helpful if you are unsure about your baby’s position or would like extra peace of mind.
