6 Weeks Pregnant: How Big Is Your Baby?

At 6 weeks pregnant, everything is still very early, but your baby is already developing at an incredible pace. This is often the stage where pregnancy starts to feel real, especially if you are experiencing early symptoms or considering your first scan.

How Big Is Your Baby at 6 Weeks?

At 6 weeks, your baby is around the size of a pea, measuring roughly 5 to 7 millimetres long.

Although tiny, your baby is growing rapidly and changing every day.

What Is Happening at 6 Weeks Pregnant?

This is a major development stage.

At 6 weeks:

  • Your baby’s heart may have just started beating
  • The brain and spinal cord are forming
  • Tiny buds are beginning to develop into arms and legs
  • The foundations for eyes and facial features are starting to appear

Even though you can’t feel movement yet, there is already so much happening.

Common Symptoms at 6 Weeks

Every pregnancy is different, but many people begin to notice symptoms around this time.

You might experience:

  • Tiredness or low energy
  • Nausea or morning sickness
  • Breast tenderness
  • Bloating
  • Frequent urination

Some people have very mild symptoms, while others feel them more strongly. Both are completely normal.

Should You Have a Scan at 6 Weeks?

Many parents choose to book an early scan at this stage for reassurance.

An early pregnancy scan can:

  • Confirm the pregnancy is in the right place
  • Check for a heartbeat
  • Estimate how far along you are
  • Identify if you are expecting twins

This can be especially helpful if:

  • You are unsure of your dates
  • You feel anxious in early pregnancy
  • You have experienced pregnancy loss before

Can You See a Baby at 6 Weeks?

Yes, in many cases you can.

At around 6 weeks, an early pregnancy scan may show:

  • The gestational sac
  • The yolk sac
  • A tiny embryo
  • A flicker of a heartbeat

Because everything is still very small, scans at this stage are sometimes done internally (transvaginal) to get a clearer image.

What If You Can’t See a Heartbeat Yet?

At 6 weeks, it can sometimes be too early to clearly detect a heartbeat.

This does not always mean anything is wrong.

In these cases, a follow-up scan is usually recommended after 1 to 2 weeks, when development is easier to see.
